This is my first instant read thermometer so I have no comparison. but it seems to do exactly what I need. My old meat thermometer would take ages to read it. Try holding it over a flaming grill and you'll see how problematic it is. So I'm glad it really is 'instant'. The instructions suggest zeroing it in a glass of ice water before first use, and that's exactly what I did. and seems fairly accurate considering how it measured the air in our house compared to our thermostat. Dipping into the BBQ meat was quick and easy with the button allowing you to hold the reading until you're done reading. That. It also comes with a handy chart showing different types of meat, doneness and required temperatures. I am very happy with this thermometer, it feels solid, looks good and its probe folds up to avoid damage (to itself or my hand if I reach for it). No complaints.
