Let's face it, these mats don't always work. Some animals seem to magically avoid wires and electric shocks. This mat works for my cat. She knows what it is and stays away from it. This rug replaces another style rug. The wire in this rug was beginning to unravel and it was possible to trip over it. I prefer this rug for several reasons. First, the previous pad seemed to turn on at random times after I turned it off. This drained the 9-volt battery relatively quickly. This carpet never did. Second, the warning tone of this rug is less distracting than other styles. It makes a sound enough to alert you. (I shocked myself several times to make sure it works and isn't too uncomfortable.) Third, it seems to be of better quality. Finally, this rug folds conveniently for storage. As another reviewer mentioned, the wires on this mat are way too far apart, I agree. However, the spacing is about the same as on my previous mat. I would wish for a manufacturer to get this right and place them close together so they are a little more reliable.
