Review on Efficient Car Top Kayak Carrier for 2 Pairs | DrSportsUSA Universal J-Bar Rack for Kayak Canoe Paddle Boat on SUV/Car Roof by Cameron Head

Not as effective as my $18 rack - disappointed

To be honest the quality of the straps and the feel/weight of the rack itself was much better than the cheap rack I used. The main feature I was looking for was a collapsible stand so I didn't have to take it off to park in the garage every time I used it. It folds up, not flat but just enough for me to get into my garage. So those are the positives. The straps that were supposed to hold the kayak on the car were so short that I couldn't tie the kayak properly. I had to use my old, longer straps. The tie at the front of the kayak was also too short. The universal rack mounts didn't fit my roof rack snugly enough to avoid twisting and rocking. I had to add pieces of bike tire inner tube on the bottom to tighten properly. It wasn't 100% stable yet. Luckily, I was able to use the kayak's too-short straps to literally tie the rack to my roof rack, which eventually made it stable. Once I properly attached it to the car, it held the kayak with no problem. The plastic clips that are designed to keep the straps from loosening after they've been tightened are a great idea and would be handy if just one of them didn't break on first use. It was safer for me to tie the strap in a knot to keep it from slipping through the clasp. All in all, without the folding feature, I would use my $18 rack and I will still use it if I plan on taking the kayak on a long trip. It works, but I had to use every workaround besides duct tape before I felt safe driving my kayak down the freeway.
