Review on Magi Labyrinth Magic DVD Set by Laura Lucero

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Surprisingly entertaining show

Alibaba is a poor guy who works for various traders to make a living. But he dreams of more - for example conquering one of the mysterious towers called "Dungeons" and becoming fabulously rich. But it's not until he meets a strange boy named Aladdin that he begins working to make his dream a reality. obviously influenced by stories from The Thousand and One Nights (and later Sinbad), but this is not a retelling. The characters are no less interesting - Alibaba seems a complete wimp but turns out to be braver and more complex than originally portrayed, Aladdin seems to be a naive kid but he manages to develop and grow as the series progresses ( not much anyway). Morgiana starts out as an oppressed slave, but regains enough self-esteem to become an incredibly strong character. I don't usually like female characters in anime, but I found that I really liked Morgiana. The first 12 episodes of Magi: The Labyrinth (of 25, followed by the second episode of Magi: The Kingdom of Magic, which is currently airing but will likely be around the same length). The set also includes a deluxe booklet and five foil stamped postcards to collect. Audio recordings are available in Japanese and English. Buying Tip: This set is a lot cheaper if you buy it from authorized retailers (it's currently $59.98 versus Revain's $84.98).
