This is my first ring flash so I can only compare it to the Canon 580EX flash. While it doesn't have the power of the 580EX, it does illuminate the subject quite well. It has all the features of the 580EX and if you can use the 580EX in manual mode you can master this MK-14EXT. This ring flash is similar to the 580EX in that a fast shutter speed gives you a dark background that makes your subject stand out better. A small aperture (f/32) gives you more depth of field, but when you use a fast shutter speed to stop motion, they work great together. If you're lucky enough to have a windless day, a slower shutter speed can help illuminate the background better. You can also use a shutter speed of say 1/125 second and an aperture setting from f/11 to f/16 and everything will work fine. I prefer to use the smallest aperture to get the best focus since Indiana always seems to be windy. There's a learning curve, but it doesn't take long to figure it all out. You can use this flash on ETTL but it reduces the fun of using it. Be creative with Flash and you'll be pleased with the results.
