I used plates to hold an oak chime clock. 14 inches wide, 3 ½ feet long, about 8 inches thick, quite heavy. A plate on each side. I could only use one hole to screw in the bolt. The remaining 3 holes were molybdenum anchors. The only problem I had was that the wall wasn't level. So I solved the problem by putting washers behind the plates that were attached to the clock. This was the only way the panels could be pushed together. The screws I used for the clock plates were about 1-1/4" long. Best used if you want to use those Common Sense plates.
