So our freezer is iced up and didn't cool well because the evaporator was sunken in the ice. I defrosted it with a hair dryer, but then it was covered in ice again (see YouTube video on defrosting the freezer). I checked the door seal, it was fine (and you can tell by the force required to open the door - you should "feel" the door sucking in some air when you open it). I checked the thermostat on the evaporator coils and found it to be fine. There are many YouTube videos on this and it's really easy with a multi-tester. Only the timer remains. Well, our fridge is fancy and has a real circuit board, not just a timer. The circuit board controls a heating element that periodically heats the evaporator inside the freezer to prevent ice from forming by melting. This circuit board is not an identical part from Whirlpool, but it is the part that Whirlpool says replaced the part in our refrigerator. Everything got up normally, connected normally, now it works. Caution: If your freezer is so iced up that the ice is soft or "melts" and you replace the circuit board with this part (or any other part that prevents the heating element from working), of course unplug the power cord first, but You can also defrost the freezer yourself (using a hair dryer and towels to catch any melted water) before replacing a part. I didn't, and the heater melted all the ice that had formed in two weeks (as intended) and because of this, a lot of water flowed into the cooling section. So I had to soak water in the fridge because of all the melted ice from the freezer, but overall it was worth it and has been working fine ever since. Whirlpool wanted over $300 for this part, so it's a $50 deal. Much cheaper than buying a new fridge or hiring someone to do it.
