This lens is capable of producing ultra clear images right to the edges. The distortion at the edges isn't bad at all and is quite corrected programmatically. The correction for optical aberrations (OVERALL) is more than sufficient (really world class). The outer case design is made of plastic; probably a suitable variety that has durable characteristics for normal use of this lens (if you want solid metal then pay 2-3 times more and more than double the weight). During use, great care must be taken to avoid shock. Plastic isn't necessarily non-functional (it's used in many high-performance and mission-critical applications), and here it seems to offer a lightness and clearly perceptible structural integrity that lends itself to a surprisingly firm feel in the hands. The internal parts to which the lenses are attached are made of metal. State-of-the-art glass (NIKKOR). Electronics and focus are 100% Nikon compatible. If I wanted to do better I would buy a 14-24 Nikkor and mount it on a D600, D800 or D800E. Period. This lens is for the conscientious photographer who studies their scenes AND the lighting (very) carefully to ensure their photos are of exceptional quality with attention to detail. It's not a snap lens per se (but you can use it at a party if the flash is set to bounce and get lots of great shots). Note that this lens really shines from f/8 to f/11. The large aperture still produces sharp images, but f/11 looks almost like medium format shot on film when zoomed in to 8x10. This lens more than meets the requirements of an ultra wide-angle lens. It costs significantly more than aftermarket lenses, but at the end of the day there need be no excuses for expending resources on buying a Nikkor, now or five years from now when someone else buys a Nikon. Impressive that such optical quality is offered at such a price; but obviously Nikon is "in the know" with all the latest advances in composite lens design and materials (ED and aspheric glass) combined with extensive manufacturing experience.
