Review on G-STORY Portable Monitor FreeSync Computer Nintendo 17.3" 1920X1080P 165Hz Ultrawide Screen - USB Hub, Tilt Adjustment, Glossy Screen - GST173 by Hank Woodall

Revainrating 5 out of 5

A great lightweight monitor that packs pretty much everything you need right out of the box.

I would like to start with the fantastic quality of G-Story's packaging and my bewilderment that its ample padding did not prevent damage as seen in other reviews. Unfortunately, I don't think the Amazon stock incidents should justify a negative review of the monitor itself. In my experience, coupled with the right connections, the display offers exactly what is described in a durable, thin and light package. HDMI 2.0 cable, 1080p 165Hz signal shouldn't be a problem as the HDMI 2.0 specification can support up to 240Hz at 1080p. I haven't found any issues setting the panel for the correct refresh rate and G-SYNC using the NVIDIA Control Panel. Brightness was optimal at 300 nits, and auto-rotation can quickly turn a monitor into an encoding-friendly format in under a second. The addition of a remote control makes sense given the difficult-to-use controller on the side. Be careful with your power adapter choice though, as I couldn't use my Anker 20W USB-C charger and only found stability when using the included 30W USB-C charger. In terms of monitor performance, the matte, anti-glare screen is pleasant. to reduce glare and I've encountered no issues in competitive FPS games when using the monitor. Although the monitor doesn't have a VESA mount or VESA screw holes, it's relatively cheap to find a quick-release VESA adapter, which could make this monitor even more versatile. With the quick-change adapter, the monitor can serve as an additional display for my main PC setup as well as a portable display when I'm on the go. As powerful games get smaller and more portable with the advent of new generation consoles, I find using a high refresh rate portable monitor like this a no-brainer. Wide range of accessories such as a remote control Includes future-oriented connectors such as USB C Great price compared to ASUS competitors Portable and lightweight Cons: Can be power hungry Not 100% SRGB Not VESA compatible Out of the box (VESA adapter can be added) Can be used in the Be brighter outdoors (although 300 nits will suffice indoors)

Pros
  • I've had it for a few months - it's solid. No need to pay $500 for ASUS XG17, buy it instead.
Cons
  • The stars would be better if the HDMI port wasn't defective when delivered.
