Subtle metal but rough wood

The metal hooks are pretty decent and warrant buying your own set. However, wooden hooks are rather disappointing. Some of them are so rough or have splinters that they literally render them unusable by just catching on the yarn and tearing it apart. It's a bit of a shame because I got the wooden hook set in the first place, but I think you get what you pay for and 24 hooks for about $14 is still a decent deal, even if few are usable. . If you want wooden ones I suggest investing in another set. IF you need a good starter kit then this is enough.
