The idea is to keep hot water in the line but not fill the cold line with too much recirculated hot water. This is a compromise and the recirculation valve closes when the hot side reaches about 95 degrees. As a result, the cold pipe also has a water temperature that is ideal for quickly washing hands in warm water or washing dishes without using the hot side. I find this handy, but for completely cold water I have to run it for a while as it starts out warm and gets colder as the water flows. Fully hot water still takes time, but it starts out warm and gets hotter as the water flows. . It's normal for a sink full of dishes, I usually let it run for a bit while I wash it to keep it nice and warm before capping the sink and refilling. Either way, it's better than dumping a gallon and a half of water every time I need hot water and washing my hands with ice water when I don't feel like waiting. The included timer is good quality and feature rich, but a little fiddly until you get used to using it. The display is quite small, difficult to see without good lighting. It has many programs for setting the off time if you know when to turn on the pump or not.
