Here are some tricks to extend filter life. Like other readers, the water in my area contains a lot of hard minerals as well as dust because I live in a desert climate. I rely on the filter working 24/7 because I work from home. Without moisturizer, my sinuses quickly dry out and become painful. After using the humidifier for a year, I found that the filter quickly "dries up" and stops working properly after a few weeks of daily 24/7 use. Dirt, dust and mold also accelerate degradation. Here's how I solved these problems: 1. Add a tablespoon of vinegar to the tank each time. I use apple cider vinegar, but white vinegar works just as well. Combine this with adding the Protec antimicrobial cleaning cartridge to the tank. Vinegar extends cartridge life from 30 days to 6 months. Using both together will greatly reduce mold growth.2. Remove the water from the bottom of the filter canister weekly, as it quickly fills up with moldy dirty water. Fill a basin half an inch full with clean water and add a teaspoon of vinegar. Clean the filter housing at least twice a month or more often if necessary.3. As you fill each tank, turn the filter over so the water at the bottom of the filter becomes the top of the filter and runs down to wet the filter. When the filter is dry, it stops activating the humidification process. You will understand this when you see that the water level stays the same and is not constantly falling. After two weeks of using it 24/7, I rinse the filter with warm water. The instructions say you shouldn't do this, but if you don't there will be a lot of dust and dirt on the filter which will cause it to degrade. I also position the filter so its opposite side is now facing the vents. When you combine these recommendations, you get a long-lasting filter that will perform efficiently and maintain its structural integrity for at least 6 months.
