Review on Recoil SL1708 Under Seat Amplified Subwoofer by Kenneth Martin

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great subwoofer for low price car

Installation: The recoil sl1708 subwoofer was very easy to install on my 2016 Subaru Forester with the included wiring harness. The hardest part was going through the firewall as there were no rubber grommets in the car to run the wire through. I'm by no means a car audio pro, but I installed quite a few amps/subwoofers when I was young. For my application it did not fit under the driver/passenger seat as there were seat controls preventing it from sliding back and into place. I ended up mounting it on a foam strip just above the spare wheel well but still under the double floor. This worked great for my sleeper setup and has the added benefit of not restricting my cargo area. It's a little difficult to lift and move out of the way, so accessing the spare tire may be necessary in an emergency. I ended up using the high-level auto-on feature to avoid having to run a remote cable back to my factory deck. The device sounds great in terms of sound, but it took a little time to fine-tune it before I found it pleasant. Factory default location of my deck. I can also confirm that the sl1708 unit I received is indeed a 240w unit with 120w max RMS and not 400w as the Revain name says in the listing. I should also mention that I used the EQ feature on the factory deck to boost my 60Hz bass and keep my 160Hz level. I have the gain and volume on the whole device and the bass boost function is also greatly reduced, maybe down to 3-4db. The LPF on the unit has also been set to a low range, allowing the subwoofer to only address and amplify the low frequencies of the music. It's also great that the unit's LPF settings reach 40Hz at all (mine is set at around 60Hz) as I feel this is more a feature of large subwoofers with high end amps that really do feature on the smaller subwoofer to be able to go deeper if you're looking for a specific sound. The combination of the lower LPF setting, reduced bass boost, and 60Hz boost on deck did a lot to reduce the "boomy" bass noted by other reviewers. With that in mind, the unit now has decent bass response, but by no means overwhelming. It just sounds like the car came with a factory subwoofer, which I really needed now that I'm in my late 30s and a bit deaf from the stupid loud subwoofers of my youth. I would definitely recommend the device to a friend or family and would definitely consider buying it again.
