As others have noted, works fine out of the box but then seems to crash with Mac OS. I disabled the WD sleep feature as another user suggested and it seemed to help for the next backup. Then after another backup attempt the same error message appeared. I checked the WD website and couldn't find any help. I found a support article from Apple stating that any kind of disk management, antivirus or other similar third party apps/utilities can interfere with Time Machine's automatic backup features. So I uninstalled all WD apps and it seems to have been backing up for a full week now with no issues. Bottom line, this is an inexpensive, reasonable-looking external hard drive for use in a time machine. Just let Mac OS take over and don't worry about WD apps/utilities.
