This product does not allow you to change the language setting to English. If you know Japanese or any other local Asian dialect then yes it will be the same. They can play American cartridges, they will play Japanese. Minecraft is okay because it's basically a visual game that doesn't require a lot of reading. My nephew (8) doesn't seem to mind Minecraft. It is unlikely that he will be able to play another game (especially learn a new game) on the device). It's a great system, otherwise everything is fine.
