These are shackles that mess up the base element quite badly. The cover is advertised as a fancy double coat, but I brushed it off by simply turning the pin into a shackle on first use. Of course, you don't normally get caught on a loop in a safety chain hitch, but the load was very light as I was stuck like a 1 foot by 1 piece of snow. Anyway, there was a small ridge on the hinge that spiraled through the coating as the pin was unscrewed. As said, works as advertised and otherwise seems to be of decent quality.
