Review on πŸ”Œ CableDeconn SFF 8643 Internal Connectors H0204: Efficient Solution for Seamless Connectivity by Marc Stewart

Revainrating 5 out of 5

These are NOT 12 Gigabit SAS cables! (is it possible with 0 stars?)

After LOTS of headaches, troubleshooting, more headaches and finally giving up and spending twice the money per piece, per "certified" LSI cables LSI logic data cables LSI00412 SAS to SAS - 1.97ft - SFF-8643 SAS to Mini-SAS (although it's too short for effective cable management and in 2018 it still uses a 4-pin Molex connector for power, which I have to cut and solder the SATA connector instead). I can say that these are actually SAS2 cables (6 gigabits) that someone plugged into a SFF-8643 SAS3 connector (12 gigabits) hoping for a quick win at a tidy markup on their old one Achieve inventory that is no longer sold (or something very similar). THEY WILL NOT CONNECT TO 12 Gigabit (SAS3) drives, PERIOD. If you plug them in while hot, the controller will respond as if nothing happened. If you try to boot with them, the controller will hang and eventually expire while the OPROM is published. For example, if you plug in some consumer SATA3 drives or maybe some SAS2 drives (both 6 gigabit), although my implementation uses them on a 12 gigabit SAS3 controller, they both negotiate a 6 gigabit connection and work great . However, if you try to connect ANYTHING that supports the full 12 gigabits (like SAS3) you will IMMEDIATELY run into SERIOUS bit flipping and all the other problems mentioned above, as these cables are CLEARLY not rated for those speeds. The moment I switched to my "certified" LSI cables (which only arrived today, no more than an hour ago), everything came alive as if nothing had happened; Hot-plugging and cold-booting work great, and performance specs are where they should be. For the past 3 months I've racked my brains to diagnose this and figure out why the new raid map wouldn't work. with SIX different brand new enterprise-class SAS3 drives (in sets of four and two) and a $700 SAS3 SSD (which I ended up having to return as I couldn't afford a $700 paperweight when it turned out that it was a hardware incompatibility which I wasn't able to diagnose until after the return period.Funny that the same SSD is now selling for $1400 after 3 months. Thanks CableDeconn!Expensive system can bring your system to its knees was my first Excursion into SAS3 It just goes to show that if you take the risk of choosing a different brand for your plant needs there is a good chance you will get burned Maybe someone can find them useful - then as a budget alternative if they would ONLY use 6Gbps drives but what do you do with a 12Gbps controller in that case should be properly labeled as a 6Gbps only cable Mine have been lying too long h rumored to be able to return them now (while trying to figure out what and where the problem was) so I'm stuck with them now. The least I can do is try to make sure others don't. Do not allow yourself to be caught in the wrong or caught in a trap.
