first impression; just OK; Turn off game mode = better picture

Edit: Thanks to Cliffs' comment on the impact of image quality when Game Mode is enabled. His hint to turn off game mode with the up arrow was helpful. I don't usually read manuals, but rather dig through the settings to change what I need. I didn't find the game mode with my usual method. Just hitting the up arrow would never happen on my approach. The picture is noticeably improved. Better smoothness, less grainy properties. Now the image quality is better for us. Color saturation is still not as good as my old Samsung, but image quality has improved almost to what I was hoping for. As this is a newer monitor I was hoping it would outperform my old monitor to some degree. This is still not the case. I would give it 3.5 stars based on the improvement from disabling game mode. The sound is still not right for me. ------ Original (modified for clarity): We bought this because my wife's 23-inch Samsung inexplicably started beeping and shutting down after 20 seconds every time it was turned on. This monitor has a native resolution of about 2048 x 1152. It didn't have built-in speakers, but we did have some cheap 90's computer speakers plugged into the car. Okay, so this particular monitor has HDMI right next to the DVI and VGA port. Others state in their reviews that this is not the case, so maybe the models have changed a bit? Ours came with an HDMI plug but no cable. There is a DVI and a VGA cable. We have an old Mac Mini on this new monitor so we don't need HDMI for it anyway. Comparison: 1. We bought Samsung 6 years ago for $260 vs. $140 for Viewsonic. one of the cheapest monitors you could buy for a 23" monitor and cheaper than most 22" models of the time. 2. This is a very light monitor. Our Samsung easily weighed twice as much. The Samsung had a nicely weighted base that had significant height and tilt adjustment. This Viewsonic has a very cheap flimsy base with no adjustments.3. Samsung had the best resolution, but Viewsonic has a standard HD resolution, which isn't bad. Samsung has better color rendering. Viewsonic seems to have weaker color saturation even after all the adjustments I can make. The Viewsonic has better brightness, but the Viewsonic looks a lot grainier. The Samsung had no sound; View Sonic has sound. but it sounds like it's coming out of a smartphone. Very thin sound. My wife says it's fine, meaning she'll be dealing with thin, tinny sound rather than big, clunky speakers and cables on her computer-filled double desk. This can be normal or she comes back with the old speakers. In my opinion I could not have lasted a day with this racquet. Why only 3 stars? In general, this monitor did not impress me. The assembly is definitely cheap and flimsy compared to the old Samsung. Overall picture quality is poor. The image has low color saturation and is noticeably grainy. Not sure why as the resolution should be similar. The sound is absolutely terrible for me. It's not height adjustable, which I knew from other reviews, but the base is even cheaper than I could have imagined. It should hold up as no one is messing with the monitor once it's up there, but it will be interesting to see if my wife has to toss some books underneath to increase the height. One has to look at the monitor as it also has a very low base. I'm not sure how comfortable it will be to look at the monitor over time. My old Samsung was a very cheap monitor for the time (much cheaper than any 22" or 23" monitor at the time) and yet it was in poor condition overall. a class above. However, Samsung didn't last long, which is the ultimate quality statement. I hope this monitor, like almost all my others, will last 10+ years. Monitors should definitely last at least 10 years. In my opinion they should then be recycled for the rare earths wasted in the manufacture of cheap junk screens that seem to break more easily compared to older models.

Pros
  • MAXIMUM COLOR AND CONTRAST: MEGA Dynamic Contrast Ratio ensures sharp and clear images
Cons
  • Overheating: If the monitor is not properly ventilated, it can overheat and cause performance issues.
