Jacket is good for the price - runs small

I ordered this jacket for a specific purpose and it should fit. I'm glad I read the reviews because of the sizing issue. It works a little. Our grandson is 13 1/2 and small for his age. I recently bought him a size 10-12 fleece lined hoodie from Lands End and it fits him perfectly. After reading the reviews on it I ordered a 16-18 and it looks like the right size for it. I won't know for sure until I bring it to his house to try on. I'm a seamstress and I often check the stitching of things before I buy them, especially cheap ones. The seams on the jacket are ok. For that price, if they weren't I'd just hand stitch the problem areas. Aside from the size, the other main complaint was the flash. It seems fine for now, but things can change. This is not a problem for me as I will be changing the jacket for an unusual purpose. So I can't say anything about the zipper problem. The reason I ordered this particular jacket is because my grandson made a special request for a Christmas present. They live outside of town and have several court cats. Due to allergies in the family, cats cannot enter the house. We live in Michigan and it can get pretty cold. One of his duties is to feed the cats and spend time with them. Their shelter is an unheated barn. I am a seamstress and our grandchildren often ask me to make special things for them. He wants a warm hoodie that has a special kangaroo-style pocket that can be attached to the front so he can snuggle cats when he's holding them. It would be warmer for him and the cat. I first looked for hoodies but couldn't find anything that looked like what I wanted. I also wanted a fleece lining because of the cold. When I saw this jacket I understood how it works. I will sew on the zipper from the chest to the opening of the zipper. So he can wear it over his head like a hoodie and still close it tighter around the neck. I then make a separate black fleece pouch and attach it over the rest of the front of the jacket. I'll probably add buttons on the side to make it easier for the cat to get in and out, but the zipper will be securely closed. I understand the frustration when zippers on jackets break and I hate replacing them. If you bought this jacket and are having problems with the zipper, the solution is to remove the zipper, sew the opening from the chest to the bottom of the jacket and close large buttons or velcro strips from the neck to the bottom of the jacket sew new opening. This turns the jacket into a very warm hoodie. Basically this is a very good jacket for the price and this change gives the kid a lot more options to use it.
