Quiet compressor, but know your air volume requirements

I saw this air compressor on the Iwata booth during Milwaukee Trainfest 2010 and was immediately impressed by its quiet operation. first purchase of airbrush compressor to avoid them due to noise and vibration. I use it with Badger Patriot 105 and Binks Wren airbrushes. At home I can control this compressor indoors without disturbing the rest of the house. Silence, however, comes at the price of a limited amount of air; Specifications show 0.64 cfm. This is sufficient for most applications, but if you need high volume for a very fine mist of paint, you may need to do this. That's why I also got a Badger Cyclone, which delivers almost three times the volume of air, but is a bit louder and generates significantly more vibration. [.] Cyclone cost $95; a price I couldn't resist. A few things to know: 1. The Iwata Smart Jet comes with two hoses, but the coiled hose connects the compressor outlet to the pressure gauge/dryer inlet. The spiral hose provides a certain amount of air storage and filters the impulses of the compressor. A second straight hose connects the hair dryer outlet to the airbrush. The outlet of the dryer is a standard 1/4" pipe thread but does not appear to be tapered. See item 4 below. 2. All Iwata hose ended products use standard 1/8" air fittings. The Smart Jet comes with three adapters to connect to Badger, Paasche and Aztek airbrushes. By the way, the Paasche adapter fits my Binks Wren.3. The compressor will start and stop instantly and will not "run" during operation, start or stop.4. All Iwata hoses and fittings use O-rings. This means that all screw connections are tightened hand-tight. However, when connecting products from other manufacturers that require tapered pipe thread connections, you will need a few turns of Teflon tape to create a good seal. I discovered this when I connected a standard Home Depot quick disconnect to a 1/4" compressor outlet. I use the Smart Jet for most of my airbrush work and only use the Cyclone when I need extra volume. To make swapping out the compressor and airbrush easier, I use 1/4" quick disconnects on the compressor end of all my hoses and Iwata 1/8" quick disconnects on the airbrush end. The bottom line is, if you want a quiet, compact airbrush compressor, get this one.

Pros
  • Moisture filter prevents pulsation
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
