It's spring, spring, a wonderful thing!
They certainly don't go down the stairs alone or in pairs, but I suspect if you drop one of them they could roll down the stairs. They worked great in several pens that went through the wash. There are still a few left, so next time I forget my pen in my shirt pocket, at least I can use it again.
