Be sure to read the installation information, or you will think it is broken when you receive it. Once properly installed, it is very durable. The gate is easy enough to open even with one hand (child in the other hand), but difficult enough that children cannot easily escape. didn't damage the walls, we rearranged the corridor a couple of times. We don't have a ladder but if installed properly I think it would be a safe gate for the top of the ladder.
