Review on Focal RSE-165 Auditor 6.5-inch 2-Way Component Speakers by Robert Aan

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great speaker upgrade!

Bought these to replace my Alpine S speakers. They are very well balanced speakers and seem to do an excellent job of isolating sound. The mids are strong and the bass is good but not overwhelming or "boomy". The vocals are strong without harshness. They should be used with a subwoofer. The tweeters are very crisp, but not shrill like Alpine. I hooked them up to a factory amp for a total of 350 watts for the whole system, but plan on getting an aftermarket amp to give them the right juice. There doesn't seem to be any gain with speakers under $200. All are good in their own way. It's almost impossible to make a choice without hearing and comparing them yourself. Update: Having spent more time with them these are great speakers but the tweeters are very sharp. Although not sharp, they are very pronounced. I had to set the treble to 0 or -1 to avoid ear fatigue. They're still way better than the Alpine S I've tried. I'm still waiting to compare them to the Morel Maximo Ultra 602 and will update this review to see what I find out. Compared to the Morel Maximo Ultra, this was a really tough challenge. They're both great speakers, but the Morels have a softer, smoother sound. Focal lengths offer amazing clarity but can sometimes be harsh if not set properly. I left Focals as the clarity is amazing. But getting it right takes time.
