Softness of charcoal, much less mess. I love working with colored pencils, but I've found that the beauty of only needing a couple of pencils makes it possible to draw almost anywhere. For those who have a lot of mishaps with these pencils, this could be your sharpener. I love the brass pencil sharpeners from Mobius & Ruppert Brass and replace the blades when the pencils start breaking. The sharp blade prevents breakage. I've found that one of the best tools for blending is a paint or makeup brush with a blunt end for finer detail. Paper with few teeth (medium texture) will hold more layers and add more depth. You can really do a lot with these three pens and I use and use them so often that I have already bought a second set.
