Out of the box. I put a ruler on the lens and it's somewhere between 42mm and 45mm. Don't rush into small details. The fact is that it is far from 55mm. If it's 45mm, then it's 10mm less than advertised. 10mm = 0.39 inch or 6/16 inch. KEY DIFFERENCE. Unacceptable. If it were really 55mm, a 10mm difference would let in 23% more light for viewing in low light and on bright moonlit nights. That's why I ordered it and that's why it came in the package to send back within 10 minutes.
