Review on BSP50 Bookshelf Loudspeakers: Immerse Yourself in Perfect Audio Quality by Amanda Hall

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Small speakers that sound small.

After purchasing the Brennan B2 - and seeing the B2's excellent sound quality - I decided to give the Brennan speakers a try. Well, after months and many hours of listening to these tiny devices, I can say with some certainty that the speakers are fine. Their dynamic range is very limited, making it difficult for you to hear quiet passages at low volumes. Bass for such a small speaker is good, but never better than good. The top end is fairly extended and never gets uncomfortably hard. The spread is very good. Loudspeakers are cheap in large part because they are cheaply made. The cases are made of thin wood, while most other components are made of plastic. My pair had a rather disconcerting low-mid peak, which I eventually traced to a dome in the center of the small woofer. I ended up applying a thin coat of rubber glue to the domes which made things a lot better. As you can imagine I don't really like Brennan speakers. Not true. At $99 a pair I'd say it's the real deal, cons and all. When playing authentically recorded music, the Brennan sounds reasonably good and is fun. Bad records sound really bad on the Brennans. If you're expecting the sound quality to be the same as the equally small Rogers LS3/5a speakers, you'll be disappointed and very frustrated after spending $99 only to have to bother to return them . But if you can accept them for what they are, you'll find that $99 is a money well spent. ADDED 25 AUGUST 2019: I cannot stress enough that these speakers are VERY sensitive to room placement and room acoustics. In the wrong position (and in the wrong room!) they transmit pretty poorly. But when positioned correctly for the environment in which they are placed, they can offer sound quality on par with speakers that cost significantly more. Since owning mine for a while and since writing my original review, I've experimented with room placement many times and have now placed it in what I feel is the optimal position. You sound great; still "little sounding", but very, very musical and audible for a long time. There are times when I would swear with my eyes closed I was listening to a pair of Quad ESL 57 electrostatic speakers. One of the finest speakers ever made. Of course, this "illusion" requires the best software material and high-quality electronics.

Pros
  • Fingers crossed
Cons
  • Hard to say
