I place the metal filter directly on the insulated coffee mug to brew straight into the mug so I don't have to clean the carafe. I buy paper filters to align the metal filter. Shaking out the metal filter in the garbage can be dirty. With a paper filter, I can just toss crumbs in the bin without shaking the filter. The filter is strong. It takes 2 minutes to boil water in the microwave with a pyrex measuring cup, and it takes another 2-3 minutes to pour the water into the filter. For another half minute, throw out the paper filter with crumbs and rinse the metal filter. So it's about a 5-6 minute process - much less time than going to the store to buy it. And this system takes up very little space to meet my coffee needs. The carafe is cute and would be nice when serving coffee to someone.
