Unreliable Lightning connection

Most of the time I connect the Lightning connector to a device (iPhone OR iPad), the device does not "recognize" the connected cable. Those are NOT my ports, that's one thing! I've tried many USB plugs, thought I needed 12w for the iPad, but it only saw it once and then nothing! Sometimes I got it to work with my iPhone 8 but never with my iPad Pro. Will try "genuine" Apple cables and devices before sending them back.
