Required for the player.
It's perfect for my house. I use it in my living room but it's a smaller space. The sound is ok. It's not impressive, but for the price it's great. Bought to connect to the player. If you have a preamp I recommend ordering an audio input cable and the other end has aux left and right (red and white ends) for audio. That worked great for me.
