This stuff works, but there's a catch.

I have been struggling with high nitrate levels (50-80ppm) on my 90 gallon reef for a while. Despite regular maintenance and frequent water changes, I have never been able to get my nitrate levels to the desired level. I decided to try this product. deNitrate works with virtually no oxygen by creating an anaerobic bacterial environment. These oxygen-poor bacteria consume nitrates and convert them into harmless nitrogen gas. This requires the environment to be in an extremely low water current zone, which of course is the opposite of what most of us have in our reef tanks. Putting this product into a canister or power filter simply won't work because the flow rate is too high. The same goes for most media reactors unless you set the stream to an incredibly slow speed. My solution was to fill two media pouches full and place them in my actual display case. I buried one in a large crevice in the living rock and the other on the other side of the aquarium in a corner with extremely low current. It took several weeks but the results were stunning. My nitrate levels are now consistently around 3-5ppm, about the ideal level for LPS corals. So the product definitely works, but it needs the right conditions. You need to find an area with very little water flow for this to work.
