Review on πŸ’§ Enhance Water Quality with Fluval G6 Tri-EX Cartridge by Amanda Rochon

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Effective but expensive

The biggest problem with the G6 is that it only has one chemistry chamber, so I bought a TRI-EX cartridge. The picture shows three different media. I assumed the car would have three chambers, but it isn't. Three chemical media are mixed together in a chamber. The downside to all G-6 chemical cartridges, aside from being expensive, is Fluval's recommendation to replace them every 14 days. The G6 is rated to work with 80- to 160-gallon tanks, so I'm guessing a 14-day shift is rated for a reasonably stocked 80-160-gallon tank. Since my 50 gallon tank is well stocked and heavily planted, I extended my carts to 21 days. Provided the water quality is good. I plan to extend this to 4 weeks and also experiment with some of my favorite media to replace Fluval media when the carts run out. The carts are reusable which is nice. After carefully removing the bottom cover and cleaning, they can be refilled with fresh media. Of course, Fluval assumes their luggage rack is optimized for the G6. They don't say other media doesn't work, they prefer that you buy their product. Overall, the trolleys are easy to use and the TRI-EX filters use carbon and media to remove nitrates and phosphates.

Pros
  • Not cheap but decent
Cons
  • Upgrades
