Incredible quality for this price! The handle is not lacquered, so it does not slip. The embossing on the handle is not deep enough to provide a better grip. The head is a good solid piece of steel. I'm a little worried about that steel apron under the head protecting the handle. I'm afraid it will break if I ever hit it on something hard. Although this should affect the life of the handle. The grain of the wood is not quite parallel to the head, but close enough. I can recommend this hammer without hesitation!
