Faulty cooling system requiring a copper pad

Aside from the 80W 3070 switch that MSI foisted on us, my particular laptop had a faulty cooling system. The copper plate that runs over the processor die only touches 20% on the left. The right side is tilted all the way up. To facilitate this I placed a 20mm x 20mm x 1mm copper spacer between the CPU die and the copper cold plate. Now it's in full contact, but the cooling is still not very good. Even with -65mV undervoltage and a thermal pad, I wasn't able to maintain the full clock speed of 4.2GHz during the test, instead dropping to 3.4GHz. However, I got 10955 points in Cinebench r23. It's nowhere near as good as the 11800h in the mp66 version of this laptop. A guy on Reddit scored 14603 overclocking all cores to 4.4GHz, so that's a testament to how capable the 11800h is. Desktop 3060 and has a small headroom for cooling. Personally, I was overclocked to 1530MHz at 0.700v. If you're willing to do that, you can probably flash the vbios with a more powerful 3070 mobile chip. Just be sure to lower the voltage when the vbios tgp is 115w+. In addition, there is enough space in the case to install thick heatsinks on NVME drives. Overall i think i will try msi mg66 with 125w 3070 as videos on net show it has better cooling.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Almost never
