They do NOT retain water

Whether they work depends on the intended use of these headphones. They are NOT waterproof. I used them in the shower and water got into the headphones. Now they worked for me. I use hearing protection as a second line of defense to keep water out of my ear after my ear surgery. I could also see the use of ear defenders to keep the hair dye out of your ear when coloring your hair.
