Not So Hot good for weather radios

professionals – well thought-out feature set and practical packaging. Pleasant tactile sensations from the radio. The solar panel's hinges feel solid, the handle is quiet, and looks well-built (with care, it should last a long time). Useful LED lighting. I like the three-way powering of the device with removable NiMH batteries (similar to cordless phones), AA battery slots, and an optional power adapter (recommended). Radio quality for NOAA is excellent. Cons - One of my main interests was listening to good quality shortwave and AM/FM. On AM/FM, the radio can only really be used in emergencies, but hardly ever. The radio suffers from 60 cycles of AC interference on AM and significant FM congestion from nearby stations. Very poor performance but maybe acceptable considering other features. However, short waves are useless. The radio is as muffled as a piece of wood. He hears a lot of clipping signals, just like AM, but real shortwave signals are almost inaudible. With the 15 foot cable attached, I heard a regional shortwave signal and WWV. You must connect a 50-foot cable to listen to stations. Bottom line: buy it because it works fairly well as a backup emergency light, clockwork generator but with limited radio capability. I haven't tested it to see if it will charge a cell phone. I actually had the chance to review 3 similar Kaito radios and they all had the same specs.
