It can only be held in place with a small, smooth plastic sponge. I'm very strong, I can increase my grip strength to 200lbs, but the awkward design of this clamp makes it a real pain to use. If you're planning on using this with a phone or a small tablet like an iPad mini, I don't think you'll have a problem. If you plan to use it with a full-size tablet like the iPad Pro 11" and you put the tablet on the stand and then never take it out, then this will work really, really well for you because the tablet will definitely never fall out accidentally!But if you plan to use it with a full-size tablet occasionally, especially one in a protective case, you're going to find it very inconvenient and difficult, and I don't recommend it for that type of use case.That is really very disappointing because in literally everything else this stance is perfect, it's head and shoulders ahead of all its competitors and it's particularly disappointing that the clip is so poorly designed as the same manufacturer sells other tablet holders that charge a lot look better I hope the manufacturer reads this (and dozens of other reviews complaining about the clip being awkward to use !) and makes a simple redesign.
