I used to buy a TROND brand USB audio dongle and it worked fine for transferring audio to and from Baofeng's small portable radio. However, when I tried using it with a higher quality cable to communicate with the FT-857D radio, I noticed a very weak audio signal. I was able to insert the TRRS connector into the TROND USB sound card connector and the sound level increased by about 30dB. That's no problem with the two DUKABEL USB audio dongles I bought. They are of very high quality and the connector on each of them interacts correctly with the TRRS connector. TROND is now for Baofeng audio cables and DUKABEL USB dongles are the ones I use for my home computer and Raspberry Pi which I will use for mobile use. Not only the quality was much better than TROND, but also the price was lower. Like TROND, it has a chipset that is automatically recognized by Linux without the need to install drivers. It's plug and play.
