These shoes are very, very wide. I was surprised they didn't fit properly as I had previously purchased a very similar NB hiking boot that fitted perfectly. To avoid the hassle of sending them back, I wear them with a pair of thin socks, under thick athletic socks, and lace them all the way (those two pairs of eyelets that lift the shoe slightly) so my heel gets tucked in and doesn't slip forward. Next time I will not buy New Balance online. However, I have to say that the extra width is a boon for my poor arthritic toes. Update: Turns out I couldn't tie them tight enough even with two pairs of socks, they dangled a bit so I kept dragging my feet. Particularly dangerous on long grass - a very expensive donation as a gesture of goodwill. It is an evil wind that blows no one!
