Review on 🎯 Perfectly Calibrated Mosaic Multi Material Printing Printers: Unlocking Precision and Versatility by David Plunkett

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Not perfect, but I'm aiming for it

The first Palette+ I got had nothing but problems from the start. Almost every time he cut the thread, it got stuck. The Mosaic customer service representatives were very helpful but had one downside: they never thought the unit itself was defective, instead assuming that my misunderstanding was the cause of the problem and kept referring me to one or the other of the same useless guides on how to fix it Troubleshooting over and over again. Well, after taking it apart about 50 times to clear the jams, I noticed a few screws were starting to loosen. So I decided to return it and get a new one. Revain made it easy to get a new Palette+. The new one had absolutely no sticking problems. So far I've used it on over twenty complex models and not a single jam! Hooray! I never found out exactly what was wrong with the old one, but my guess is that either the cutter was making messy cuts, or the hardware between the cutter and the welder was slightly out of spec. With the new one I still had problems with the joints. Most of the time they were fine, but every once in a while the extruder broke down and wasted a lot of time and materials. I spent many hours setting up the splicing process but still had this problem. Frequent firmware and chroma updates have helped improve splice quality over time, but I've never been able to get 100% of my splices good enough to get by with the extruder. Today about 99% of these are fine, but that's not enough when you have models that require hundreds of connections. I solved this problem by adopting the following rule: Don't print anything that requires more than 50 cuts. I've found that realigning or redesigning heavily glued parts works best, and in some cases breaking the model into more manageable sections and then gluing them together works. Before you buy Palette+, there are a few downsides you should be aware of. First, you won't be able to use the entire printing platform, at least for pure color transitions. On average, around 40% of your bed is used for the Transition Tower, a block of unused material needed to make Palette+ work. It could be much worse (see screenshot). A simple four color transition tower snowman decoration that uses 6 times the materials of the real model! Second, you spend about 40% of the thread on that useless transition tower and all the time it takes to build it. So if you have larger models that take up more than 50% of your print bed and also need well-defined color transitions, this probably won't work for you. What if your model + transfer tower is too big for your build platform? Instead of the software telling you this, you get lots of cryptic error messages that don't make any sense. Mosaic staff are fully aware of these shortcomings and are constantly improving their firmware and Chroma software to minimize time and material costs. For example, they recently added the ability to put about 6% of wasted material into the Transition Tower instead of filling your model. I know this review may sound overly critical, but please don't get me wrong. Ultimately, Palette+ is a brilliant invention and Mosaic's customer support is as good as it gets.
