Purchased this in July for my 8 year old who had a 2 hour soccer practice session in the summer and drank plenty of water to stay hydrated. It didn't smell or taste like plastic and never leaked for him. He was tough with it because he's a kid and he coaches football. Very early on the "open" button broke, but whatever it was, it was just a bezel of sorts, as the real button was underneath, and it still closed, didn't leak, and he could push to open. I blame a design flaw. in the pen. It took 4 months, but one night at soccer practice the handle broke. It's difficult for grown-up hands, let alone kid's hands, to carry a 64-ounce water bottle without a handle, so we'll be buying a new one. The handle is too flimsy to take the weight of all the water so I guess it must have happened. But otherwise the last 4 months were great. My son had no trouble drinking through the straw opening/closing it and it only "leaked" once when he screwed the cap on crookedly and I fixed it, otherwise it never leaked. Wash it in the dishwasher between hand washes about 2-3 times a week.
