Review on Caster Kit for Gladiator GACK04KDSX - Ready to Assemble by Charles Lardieri

Sturdy but not the best design

Attention! The description does not mention that the front (lockable) casters are fixed and only the rear casters rotate. That means the units don't rotate either, especially if you have a countertop that sits over two cabinets like I did. The units are still mobile but have a supertanker turning radius. I see the fixed castors as a design flaw. There are many casters that can be turned and locked, so this limitation doesn't make much sense. While other reviewers have complained about installation, I found it fairly easy despite having some pretty shoddy devices. I bought these to replace the individual bolt rollers that bent the sheet metal because the frame wasn't strong enough to support a normal load through a single attachment point. The included bolts are a little short, but even with the sheet metal tightened from the previous rollers, I only had to hammer out one of the bolts in the two sets of rollers. Another point that may have confused other reviews is that the front and rear rollers have different bolt configurations. The front roller studs are closer together than the rear studs. Therefore, if you move the bottom panel of the cabinet backwards, you will not be able to install the casters as directed. This was the case with one of my two cabinets, but only took about 15 minutes to fix once it was identified. conventional four-bolt casters available from Home Depot/Lowes/etc. Overall they are quite heavy and should hold up much better than my previous reels, but the fixed reels in this price range prevent them from earning 5 stars.

Pros
  • Compatible with some ready-to-assemble garage cabinets
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
