You can set the sensitivity and vibration or alert level, as well as the level of "disciplinary" static from 1 to 7. I've also used it indoors when it starts barking at non-threatening noises outside. I don't want him to stop barking defensively, but I also don't want those dogs that bark at everything and nothing.
