I've been using the 18-55mm kit lens since I bought my Canon SL2 which I use for video recording. It does its job reasonably well, but compared to the Sigma 17-50mm there is a day/night difference. Literally! This lens is a game changer for videos where previously the slightest hint of low light would distort my shot. Now I can shoot clearly in low light. In addition, the stabilization is excellent. This lens is my current lens and you can't beat the value! My only criticism of this lens is the sound. It makes a high-pitched sound when autofocusing, which can be distracting when you're shooting something in a quiet environment. Even if you're recording audio, your microphone (if mounted on an accessory shoe) will surely pick it up in a quiet environment. However, this has never been a deciding factor for me, but it's something to keep in mind when choosing a lens. Otherwise I'm very happy with the Sigma 17-50mm lens on my Canon SL2. While I'd love to upgrade to the Canon 24-70mm at some point, the price is a little out of reach at the moment so it's perfect for all needs. If you're looking for a cheap/expensive lens for your Canon DSLR, you'll be grateful you chose one.
