This is a 2.5" stainless steel **splice** outlet. Overlapping means that the materials overlap each other and do not abut where the materials abut. This means that one end accommodates the overlapping exhaust pipe while the smaller end clamps the pipe tighter with a slip fit. You get a lap joint when you have a slip-fit exhaust pipe, where one pipe slides into the other. I was building a 2.5" exhaust and didn't want to weld cats on and not be able to easily remove the exhaust without a jack lift (that's just me in the garage and a jack). You don't want to get cheap horseshoe/u-bolt clamps as they make indentations in the pipe (make it round) and are prone to leaks and sometimes make it almost impossible to "unclip" the exhaust pipes.
