Sufficient width and depth to prevent sagging of the shoulders when hanging the shirt. Laterally strong enough to handle heavy or wet clothes hanging on the pole. The crossbar is not rounded, but the width of its U-shape is such that the pants do not crease in the middle. For those who have been through many different types of plastic hangers brittle or sagging and started thinking that old wire hangers might be the only solution, this was a revelation. Truly the best hangers I've ever used.
