The previous owner never installed a floor drain in the basement with appliances where the well pressure tank was and we had to have some serious filtration due to that he saved money and didn't drill a hole deep enough to get away from a bad upstream. So I was always worried about a big water leak as it has nowhere to go. A bunch of other major plumbing work was done to make room for the softener, so the plumber installed a valve for me. Works very well. Very sensitive, just a drop or even wet fingers will set off the alarm and close the valve. Of course you always need to check this regularly to make sure the valve isn't frozen lest you get a false sense of security, but the controller checks the valve every 30 days to make sure it's not stuck due to mineral content in the water. In fact, there was a problem after the installation. The plumber used a 40 gauge socket because the truck was running out of 80. He tried to be careful when putting it on but after 3 days the PVC plug broke and I didn't see it until FloodStop closed the valve and sounded the alarm. The plumber came back and replaced the snapped plug with a Schedule 80 part and we got back to work. Luckily it wasn't a really big leak but the leak was about 5 gallons in 8 hours so maybe without the FloodStop it would have been. big mess. Can sleep a little better with FloodStop and sensors. I will add a few more remote sensors for the dishwasher and laundry. I also plan to use the output to drive a 220V contactor relay that will shut off power to the well pump if a leak is detected. This eliminates any potential leakage between the well pipe inlet and the pressure tank as the check valve is obviously only on the outlet side of the pressure tank. A very economical solution. The plumber I used had another system they sell but that wouldn't work in my case. This system was based on water flow over a period of time, allowing you to set how long the water should flow before it shut off. With our backwash filters we would have to set the flow time so long that it interfered with leak detection (and his system is about $1600!) I would buy this again if I needed it in the future.
