it beeps every time I approach it. Ok seriously I had another one for years but died tragically I really enjoyed it when I went to replace it I spent time looking for this particular one. I've used others with more functionality from time to time that detect pipes and wires and whatnot, but they didn't do their main job of finding studs in walls like this one did. Last one I've had in over a decade I believe and never ran out of battery.
