Like many others (especially in my age group), I had concerns about air quality after a heavy downpour caused large fires early in the morning last week. This is on top of the pandemic situation and my wife is a nurse for COVID-19 patients. I was fortunate enough to replace the (best) filter in our air conditioner a few days before the thunderstorm just to deal with the extreme heat outside. When the smoke started to appear, I set the fan to run continuously, where it worked for about a week. I was looking at AQI reports/maps all the time. The problem was that I didn't know how good our indoor air compared to the outside air. I wanted to know if more drastic measures were needed to protect us; So yesterday I ordered a meter from Revain which arrived 18 hours later. I played with it for about two hours. This is the Temtop LKC-1000S - $79.99 + tax. When I first started using it, the AQI charts outside the Livermore area showed around 140. The reading inside the house was around 45. To get some confidence in the instrument's accuracy, I took it outside and it read 130 . Since then the inside has gone into the low 50s and the cards into the high 150s for the outside. If the external reading drops to about 100, if the internal reading drops to about 25, I try turning the fan off and see what happens.
