Review on Shapelets by Kevin Shimmens

I use shapelet to extract various features from my data, such as mean values of different periods or seasonalities (seasonal decomposition). It is very easy to implement with R packages like fGarch package which allows me to work in an environment that has not been well developed yet by other platforms. There are some issues when using this software but they can be solved easily once you have basic knowledge about it's functions. Try it out! You will find lots of interesting applications especially if your area of interest lies within finance domain. Extracting meaningful information from financial datasets without having any prior experience in statistics is one thing we do everyday at our organization.
