They are a little thinner than expected considering they are designed to fight allergens. Still, I was able to easily cut them out and reattach them. One of my air conditioners is from the 70's or 80's so doesn't have prewashed plastic filters and has to use a foam filter which you can buy at any hardware store. I couldn't just use this filter in this conditioner so I had to put in a new foam filter and then put this filter on top of it because it's too thin. Without it, he would be sucked into the system, which I really don't want. For the most part I didn't really trim it down though, except for an air conditioner because most of mine have enough clearance where air isn't being drawn in to fold it up. I wish they were a little thicker and I don't expect them to have the filter quality I'm hoping for, but in allergy season anything is better than nothing
